What effect is modern technology having on our children?

Everywhere you go and from toddler age upwards you won’t fail to see people on a computer, lap top or mobile phone. This can be on the bus, in a restaurant, on the beach – in fact anywhere at all. Yes, it’s great that modern technology is so advanced now saving us time and opening the whole world to us but to what cost and extent is this damaging to our youngster’s health long term. Do you read that and think that it’s an over exaggeration, well don’t be too quick to judge and think again!

If like me (a child of the sixties) you would have been used to playing out doors in parks or on the beach maybe, up in the hills, out on a bike everyday after school and in general be out and about much more than some kids of today. Of course, there are often several factors involved in this with regards to safety awareness etc, but it does tend to lend itself to the problem that because of excessive use of technology that children and teenagers have a much more sedentary lifestyle than those of the past decades

.

I have young nephews myself and although they are monitored carefully to how long they are on their computer games or mobile phones I know that unfortunately many do not have that discipline. Tricky but experts in back care such as Chiropractors are warning parents that their children are putting themselves at risk. Chiropractors especially are certainly noticing that there is an increase in youngsters coming to them complaining of neckache, headaches and backache. You maybe surprised to learn that nearly half of adults questioned about their youngster’s physical state agreed that they do not do enough exercise and spend too much time on their computer games etc. This can only have a damaging effect on our youngsters’ posture and wellbeing.

Another fascinating amount of information is available on www.backblog.co.uk. Why not look and read lots of self-help advice and tips on a variety of subjects? Here are some very simple tips that I would like to share with you that could help to reduce pain in your teenagers back and neck;

Children should get moving and not sit still for lengthy periods of time – this can be walking, cycling or running

Make sure that they have a good posture when sitting at a table or desk when doing their homework or are typing at a keyboard and computer. The screen should be level with their eyes and their feet should be flat on the floor.

Make sure they have regular breaks and a simple tip is too get them to stretch their arms and shrug their shoulders to help keep the muscles more relaxed.

Don’t allow them to sit still for too long.

Don’t spend too long on a mobile phone as this can put extra pressure on the muscles in the neck and possibly leading to headaches

Children will often copy adults and mimic their actions so try to set a good example and if they see how you limit your time spent on modern technology hopefully they will do the same.

So, don’t let your children suffer in silence and damage their future health. The human body is amazing but occasionally things get too much, and a chiropractor can look at these signals so why not check outwww.lushingtonchiropractic.com
